Alsace @ Ruby Wine

I finished work on Friday and wanted to hit two places in the neighborhood. One was a bit of a bust, as I was hoping to catch up with the members of Gun Outfit before their show at the Bottom of The Hill.  They hadn’t arrived yet so I sat and had a beer and listened to Nodzzz play 3 or 4 songs during their sound check.

The Girls were to pick me up at Ruby Wine as I also wanted to hit their Friday Flights. Turns out they were doing a tasting of wines from Alsace (say it with me “Al-sauce”). Here’s how the white’s turned out.

2007 Dirler Sylvaner

Couldn’t catch much on the nose with this one, but it had a super clean taste.  Not tart or crisp really, though I wrote down “good metal” whatever the hell that means. There was a sweetness to it, in a fresh green veggie way.  Think in-season green beans.  This could easily be polished off all by itself at any time of the day.

2009 Kuentz-Bas Riesling

I loved the nose, it reminded me of lemon lime Gatorade, but not in a bad way. More like when you wake up at 4am and all those Miller High Life’s have your brain a blaze and all that will extinguish it will be that ice cold Gatorade in the fridge.  It inevitably disappoints though, so you go have a pee and a couple advil and try not to sweat through the blankets.

In any case, forget the disappointment, this Riesling is more like that very first gulp of sweet relief, and the nose is just that kind of reminder. The sweetness punches through right away but balances on the finish into nice mineral notes. A really good dry Riesling that I ended up purchasing on my way out and already have plans to drink tonight. This stuff would kill with a nutty cheese. What a weird sentence.

Next post, I tackle the Pinot’s of the night.  Maybe a little Record Store Day gloating in between.
